WSU Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center

One Roof Panel, Curved in Two Ways

Prominently situated at the main entry to the WSU Pullman Campus, the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center features a design that was unique in concept and execution to bring together different cultures.

The Center is named after Elson S. Floyd, the 12th President of the University who served as the inspiration for the creation and the design of the Cultural Center. “It was in honor of the land and the people of the land, not just now but in its history.” The designers at GGLO worked closely with skilled engineers and installers on the greatest challenge this project presented – an undulating roof with no straight lines – and did so almost entirely with 3D BIM modeling.

The installation of this project was an incredible structural feat given that the roof curved in two directions and featured a series of curved ‘eyebrows’ that incorporated skylights with curbs. A portable roll forming machine curved Morin’s SLR panels on-site and then crane lifted in bundles to installers. To add even more drama, the panels are coated in a color-shifting paint finish that presents a different color to the eye depending on the viewing angle or the lighting at different times of day.

The design of the walls included the use of bold exposed wood structural components with metal panel highlights. The metal accent panels were Morin’s W-12 chevron profile wall panels in Bright Silver and Dark Bronz
